South Australia is the driest and most arid of all the Australian States, with vast dry salt lakes and deserts stretching the top two thirds of the state. The rugged southern coastline is thrashed by the howling Southern Ocean, making it one of the country’s most spectacular sights. Around the capital Adelaide, things are much more climatic with the country’s best wine growing area, Adelaide’s Barossa Valley, being world renowned. Adelaide with its 1.1 million residents is a lovely city set amongst parks on the Torrens River. The city is known for its arts, with the Adelaide Arts Festival and Womadelade drawing performers from all over the world. South Australian’s love their sport too, with AFL football supporting two Adelaide teams, the V8 Supercars race through city streets and the international tennis and Test Match cricket taking place over summer.
