Anglesea

Anglesea
Sitting at the foothills of the Otways, Anglesea is the first township along the Great Ocean Road where the road starts hugging the coastline.

Located 35 klm from Geelong the town has become a favourite of holidaymakers and campers, during summer months the population can grow from around 2000 to 10000, with around half of the houses in the town being holiday houses.

Anglesea’s main beach sits between the Anglesea River in the north-east and Point Roadnight in the south, its location makes it well protected from the westerly weather and a pretty safe beach for kids to swim at, making Anglesea a popular destination for school camps.

Dividing the town in two is the Anglesea River which is a popular spot to do some fishing, Bream are abundant in its estuary, and you are sure to get a bite. The river bank is also the spot where several markets are held during the warmer months.

The Anglesea Golf Course is popular not only with golfers but also with the local wildlife, hundreds of kangaroos call the course home and laze around on the greens without a care in the world as golf balls rush past them. It really is a great sight to see.

Anglesea backs on to a forest plantation at the base of the Otways set amongst this is a small open cut coal mine and power plant that partly powers Alcoa’s Point Henry works. Many visitors to the town don’t release there is a mine and power plant in Anglesea’s backyard, the mine can be viewed via lookouts off Coalmine and Camp Rd’s.
