Glenelg Tram
The Glenelg Tram is Adelaide’s only remaining tram service, it runs from the city to Glenelg’s Jetty Road where you will find a cosmopolitan atmosphere of shopping, restaurants, entertainment and amusements. At the last stop of the Glenelg end of the line you will find yourself at Mosley Square which is situated just metres from the beach and the Bay Discovery Centre that is located in the Old Glenelg Town Hall. Trams currently depart from Victoria Square in the CBD every 15 to 20 min for the 30-min trip to Glenelg. Currently under construction is an extension to the tram line that will bring trams back to the city centre.
The O-Bahn
The 12 Kilometre Adelaide O-Bahn is the world’s longest and fastest guided bus way. Opened in 1986 the A$98m project transports over seven million passengers to and from the Adelaide CBD to the Tea Tree Plaza shopping centre in Tea Tree Gully. The O-Bahn is a unique as there are very few other guided bus ways around the world, It allows slightly modified city buses to travel like a train at speeds of up to 100 km an hour on its special concrete tracks. The 20-min trip covers some great scenery, including the green park lands of the River Torrens Linear Park.
South Australian Maritime Museum
Near the Heart of Port Adelaide, you will find the South Australian Maritime Museum, located in the historic 1850s Bond stores that once housed goods and cargo to be transported to and from the historic port. Today it houses a fantastic collection of seafaring Exhibitions as well as many historic vessels and a lighthouse that offers spectacular views of Port Adelaide.
Australian National Motor Museum
The Australian National Motor Museum is located at Birdwood which is a small country town on the outskirts of Adelaide. The Museum is the largest car museum in Australia and houses many cars from both Australia and around the world. Originally sponsored by Holden, it is a must-see pilgrimage for the Holden enthusiast. The Drive to Birdwood is a scenic one that can also take you past the Giant Rocking Horse attraction, some bus services also go to Birdwood.
Adelaide Migration Museum
Housed in the historic 1850s Adelaide Destitute Asylum, The Migration Museum celebrates South Australia’s diverse cultures. The museum houses a number of permanent and changing exhibitions that tell the stories of the people who immigrated and settled in South Australia. There is also an exhibit about the history of the old Asylum itself and the people that lived there.
Skycity Casino
Sitting on the edge of the Adelaide’s CBD and the River Torrens only a few blocks from the famous Rundle mall is the magnificent 1920s Railway station building that now houses the
Adelaide Casino. Transformed into the casino in 1985 the Grand old railway station retains much of its neoclassical features. The casino is also home to many bars and restaurants and
Its marble hall is regularly used a nightclub and a place for staging major events. The casino is undergoing some redevelopments and improvements in keeping with the heritage listed building’s character, stage one which created a new front bar and restaurant opened in late 2004 with future stages set to merge the casino to Adelaide’s new Riverbank Precinct.
