Port Douglas is where the beautiful people come to play with its beautiful sunshine, magnificent resorts, golf courses and some of the best facilities found anywhere in Australia and the gateway to the world heritage Great Barrier Reef.
The town is very laid back, although it has a sophistication found only in the major cities of Australia, designer clothes, gourmet food, fancy coffees and brand names are all the go, but there is a tropical charm which makes this place special. The town started its major tourist and resort push in the late 1980s when the massive Mirage resort opened in the area with luxurious accommodation, golf courses and facilities never before seen in Australia.
Port Douglas is more than the huge resorts and lifestyle, it is in the centre of all that brings people to this part of the world, within a few minutes from town you could be in the World Heritage Daintree Rainforest or Cape Tribulation, out on a boat heading to the Great Barrier Reef, lying on the palm shaded sands of the Four Mile Beach or at Mossman Gorge.
Port Douglas is about 69 km north of Cairns and about an hour’s easy drive from the international airport. There are some spectacular coastlines and picturesque cane farming to see along the way. There are dozens of attractions in the area to explore and many places to book tours and tickets. One of the favourites is the Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary, here you can see some strange and beautiful animals found in the area, including the rare Tree Kangaroo and dangerous cassowary which is the third-largest bird in the world. This sanctuary has over 180 species has several habitats to explore including rainforest, wetlands, grasslands, and woodland environments.
Once a gold field, Port Douglas is one of Australia’s premier tourist destinations, with great weather, world-class facilities, some of the best natural wonders on its doorstop and well worth considering in planning a trip to Far North Queensland.
