Brisbane is one of Australia’s most progressive cities, currently enjoying large growth in population and investment.
The 80s put Brisbane on the world map with the hosting of the 1982 Commonwealth Games and the huge tourist drawing Expo 88 on the city’s South Bank. Since then Brisbane has never looked back now with great nightlife, theatres, galleries and museums and not forgetting a great street cafĂ© and outdoor eatery scene soaking up the Queensland sun Brisbane is thriving.
Set on the banks of the Brisbane river about 25 km up stream, Brisbane is home to about 1.6 million people. The city area is relatively flat and most of the sights and attractions are close, so it is an easy city to explore on foot.
The city centre is home to a large shopping scene with large department stores and many smaller speciality shops. With Brisbane’s great balmy weather, fashion and great food make up most of the shopping.
The Brisbane Casino is well worth a flutter, built in a historic sandstone Treasury Building it is now home to a gaming Mecca complete with pokies, gaming tables, and you guessed it a great buffet.
The Expo 88 site on South Bank has now been transformed into a magnificent parkland with extensive gardens, and rock pools and inland beaches which attract thousands on all year round. There is an extensive range of restaurants and shopping plus South Bank is home to the Brisbane Museum one of Australia’s finest and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
Being built on the river, there is no shortage of ferries and tourist craft to choose for a trip up the Brisbane. Wide waterways give spectacular views of the City, Suburbs and the historic iron Storey Bridge.
