The Cat and Fiddle arcade is one of Hobart’s vibrant shopping arcades, once the home of the Cat & Fiddle Inn which opened in 1817. The beautifully restored H Jones & Co and IXL stores have been converted into funky bars, restaurants and hotels.

Historic Richmond is a must for any tourist. This small town is jammed packed with historic buildings, cafes, pubs, galleries and antiques. Just 20 minutes drive from the city it offers hours of adventure. Much of Hobart and Tasmania’s history is in beautiful sandstone structures which were built by the Convicts imprisoned in Van Demons land when the state was basically a series of penal settlements.

There are some magnificent Edwardian and Victorian buildings spectacularly set with the rolling hills of Mount Wellington in the background. In the 1980s, a Japanese starfish Asterias amurensis was introduced in ballast water that was discharged into the port at Hobart, Without any natural predators they spread rapidly. Today, the island’s Derwent Estuary is home to an estimated 28 million of the pests.
